Throughout the year, Yosemite Wawona Elementary Charter School has been exploring Yosemite. While exploring, we studied the four "-Ology's", Hydrology, Ecology, Geology, and History/ Culture. We followed in the footsteps of John Muir by hiking though out Yosemite and observing the natural beauty of it. When we were studying hydrology, we took a field trip and followed the path the water took to get from the Hetch-Hetchy Reservoir to San Francisco. While we were in San Francisco we went to the Bay Model Visitor Center and got a tour of the 3-D hydraulic model of the San Francisco Bay area. Over the many field studies that we did, we learned about Yosemite's past, present, and the possibilities of its future. Along with the cultural history of Yosemite's people. We also learned about glaciers and shared the information we learned with other schools. I am grateful for the learning experience that I have had in Yosemite this year and I am glad that I got to have this year full of beauty. I hope to continue it through the summer and next year. Now I have a few questions for you, please answer in the comments below. What is your favorite place in Yosemite to explore? What would've it looked like 10,000 years ago? Let us know what you think the most important part of Yosemite is and what we should blog about next.
The 7th graders recently took a field trip down to Yosemite Valley to see what they were doing to preserve and protect the National Park. When we were there, we discovered that they had installed a water fountain with a refilling station that tells you how many plastic water bottles you have saved by refilling your water bottle there. They also put a recycling can near almost every trashcan. While there, we discovered that when you buy a hot drink (hot chocolate, coffee, tea) at Degnan's Deli, if you use your own mug instead of the ones they provide, they will give you a discount! We brought some of these ideas back to Wawona School. Our school doesn't have a water fountain that counts how many plastic waterbottles you have saved. However, we can use a tally sheet and talley how many bottles of water we have filled with the waterbottles we got at the beginning of the year.
We are the Young Ambassadors of Yosemite National Park and we would like to know who is going onto our website. Please comment below your name, where you are from, and what you would like to know about us. :-)
